The Challenges

Designing a digital headstone customisation tool came with unique emotional, technical, and usability challenges:

Emotion-Sensitive Design

Establishing a beacon for grieving families, which would allow them to be able to use the service while not being barraged with emotion in their most trying times, was the delicate challenge we had to rise to.

Complex Visual Previews

Producing engraved designs and stone textures previews in real time was very technically challenging to implement, with high-fidelity output in varying screen sizes and browsers.

Multi-Device Accessibility

Families, as well as funeral homes, had to have access from tablets, mobiles and desktops. The UI/UX challenge here was to make this experience work really lovely and consistent across devices.

Customisation Logic

To handle diverse design inputs including fonts, icons, stone types, layouts, and so on, such a logic system had to be powerful yet predictable, to cover all the edge conditions without grinding the system to a halt.
